Module 5: Where Does All The Time Go? – Time Vortexes & Savers – Overview

Module Overview: Where Does All The Time Go? - Time Vortexes & Savers

In this fifth module, your student will be learning about Time Vortexes and Savers! The overview and weekly instructions are designed to help you support your student throughout this month. By the end of this month, your student will be able to:

  • Identify Time Vortexes that could be stealing away their productive time
  • Make a plan to control Time Vortexes by activating Time Savers, or measures to mitigate the impact of each Time Vortex
  • Implement Time Savers as part of their daily routine

What are Time Vortexes and Time Savers?

A Time Vortex is an activity that pulls your attention away from the task at hand.

  • They can come in many forms that include eating and drinking, social media, playing with a pet, etc.

Time Savers are methods to neutralize time stealers.

  • Recognizing and creating time savers is a useful tool to keep on task and finish the task or assignment on time.
  • Time savers can be implemented preemptively or as an intervention.

Everyone, including adults, experiences at least some Time Vortexes during their day, usually on a fairly regular basis. Though they are often small side tasks or distractions, they steal our work time and we become less efficient. Sometimes, this just means that our work takes longer than expected, but other times it can mean that we don’t have time to finish our task, or that we have to skip something else that we wanted to do in order to finish the task.

We can choose two different approaches to control Time Vortexes. We can either take preventative measures by clearing our space of distractions and checking in with ourselves to make sure our physiological needs are met before beginning our work, or we can identify them as we’re working and adjust our work plan to remove any unwanted Vortexes. Both of these strategies are types of Time Savers, which we will help your student identify during this module.
